A farmer takes the dinosaurs from his farm for a day out at the beach causing havoc and destruction for all around.

Kipper’s Beach Ball by Mick Inkpen (Hodder)
Kipper finds a beach ball in his cornflakes so he and Tiger take it to the beach to play with.

Sandcastle (Little Kipper) by Mick Inkpen (Hodder)
Simple story about building a sandcastle. Out of print but plenty second hand on Amazon.

Lucy & Tom at the Seaside by Shirley Hughes (Red Fox)
Another beautifully illustrated book from Hughes, which perfectly captures childhood visits to the seaside.

Magic Beach by Alison Lester (Allen & Unwin)
This is an Australian picture book written in rhyming couplets that convey captivating images.

Melrose and Croc Beside the Sea by Emma Chichester Clark (HarperCollins)
Croc is feeling grumpy so best friend Melrose takes him on a trip to the seaside.

Rover by Michael Rosen (Bloomsbury)
Written from the perspective of a dog whose owner gets lost on the beach.

Sally and the Limpet by Simon James (Walker)
Sally finds a limpet in a rock pool. She decides to move it to safety but it sticks to her finger and won’t let go.

Seashore by Lucy Bowman (Usborne Beginners)
Simple information book that explains what the seashore is and what lives there.

Seaside Poems by Jill Bennett and Nick Sharratt (OUP)
Fantastic selection of seaside poems for young children.

Sharing a Shell by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks (Macmillan)
This was one of my son Harry’s favourites. A rhythmical rhyming tale about friendship, caring and sharing.

The Sand Horse by Ann Turnbull and Michael Foreman (Andersen)
Such a shame this is out of print. Again find second hand copies on Amazon. Beautifully illustrated book about an artist sculpting a horse in the sand. The sand horse eventually joins the white horses in the surf as they gallop in with the tide.

Thistle Sands by Mike Nicholson and Claire Keay (Picture Kelpies)
Described as ‘a braw Scots story for bairns’, this picture book is written in rhyming verse containing Scottish vocabulary.

Shells by Graham Saunders (Usborne Spotter’s Guides)
Contains good quality pictures for identifying shells. Plenty of second hand editions on Amazon.

Winnie at the Seaside by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul (OUP)
Winnie and her cat Wilbur go on a trip to the seaside but the trip turns to chaos when Winnie’s broomstick is washed out to sea.
